HIP HOP FROM PARIS TO PUNJAB…DESI BOOME!
TUESDAY, 1st NOVEMBER 2011 | By Rishma Dhaliwal | London

HIP HOP FROM PARIS TO PUNJAB…DESI BOOME!

Hailing from the streets of Paris, Imran Nasar AKA Desi Boome initiated his music career in the French Hip Hop scene. Hhhmm French Hip Hop… music surrounded by poverty, politics and drugs? Not  in this case! Desi Boome has added a fresh new vibe to the French Hip Hop scene, by fusing his own culture and language with the music genre he grew up on. A bi-lingual rapper, Desi Boome has broken into the French Hip Hop scene on a mission to give a voice to the desi community in France, and introduce a fusion of beats, lyrics and language. Having shared the stage with various artists from the UK Asian music scene, Desi Boome is making himself known and ready to gain the global recognition he deserves!

I catch up with Desi Boome to find out more…

For those who haven’t heard of Desi Boome, tell us a bit about yourself?

Desi Boome real name as Imran Nasar, the first ever punjabi/french rapper comin' all the way from Paris, FRANCE. I started to rap at the age of 10 years, from a family where two of my older brothers were French rappers so I followed the trend. I then started to rap in "Desi/punjabi" to bring my personal touch in France, a brand new concept. I started through French rap and this has influenced the intonation and the accent of my voice, I have my own style.

When did you first realise you have the ability to rap?

I never thought I would have the opportunity to speak one day on a microphone, everything is done step by step. In our street we speak as we rap (haha !). Seriously as a kid I was fascinated by the battles of hip-hop, "beatmaking" etc ... and I knew that in France we "Desi" are a minority, So I intended to represent, to move "our voice" I fought either against others or against myself get my first few tracks on French compilation and to get some freestyles onto French mainstream radio ... That's how I do this! This are not just a dream for me, it became a duty!

You also rap in Punjabi, do you feel this helps widen the fan base for your music?

Yes, for me rapping in Punjabi is more representative for the voice that is ours, it also allows me to stop to set some limits, some borders to my music. I can spread it in France & all over the world!

How did growing up in France have an influence on your musical style?

That has a very big influence on my music style because basically I’m a French rapper, I've got my French rap ideas and now I do it in Punjabi :)

Tell us a bit about the French Hip Hop scene? Are there any artists that you would particularly like to work with from there?

French Hip Hop scene is particularly underground; changing day by day, new talent progressing... many hip-hop battles are held. It’s been 10 years and people are still following the same concepts, so I think we should change it a little and bring something new to this music, freshness. Bhangra is like everyone is talking about a girl, beer and love and that’s the same in the French rap although they claim it is all the misery, injustice, drugs ...
I don't know  yet but surely will work with someone special ! Everything is related to the surprises that I reserve!

What is the Desi music scene like in France, are there any artists we should look out for (besides you!)?

There is progress day by day; there are some new people who are trying to sing in Punjabi/Urdu. I think it’s time and a good way for the french Desi community to gain recognition. Beside me you should always look out for people who have the talent but lack of funds because that's where I come from.

Tell us a bit about your latest track ‘Assi Desi’?

"Assi Desi" is a song designed to bring together the community "Desi" whether Pakistani, Indian, Sri Lankan, and Bengali!
Whatever country we come from we are from the same root with the same objective so we should never fight against each other, we should all unite.

You have supported many artists at concerts, which performance has been your most notable?

Performing alongside Shizzio, Kami K, Raxstar, Kan D Man, PMG, KEE, Kazz Kumar, Swami Baracus, Menis, Metz & Trix, Drilla Kid... & all of the Burban Team!

What are you currently working on?

I'm currently working on my album, I am in the recording process... so I can't announce any dates for the moment but I swear it will be BIG! PHENOMENAL!

Where can the B4U fans find out more about you?
